Another Good Cop Shot to Death

A member of Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office was critically wounded and later pronounced dead in the hospital when he was shot by two unidentified motorcycle riding-in-tandem suspects in the early Monday morning on June 8, 2015 in Barangay Poblacion, Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The victim was identified as SPO4 Samson Nillas Samonte, 43, resident of Barangay Poblacion, Diplahan and assigned at Diplahan Municipal Police Station.  He sustained two gunshot wounds on the head and the right arm. The victim was rushed to Wilfredo Palma Memorial Hospital in critical condition.  He was later transferred to Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Hospital in Pagadian City for further medication where he later expired.   

Report reaching Police Regional Office 9 Headquarters disclosed that subject PNCO was having his routinarymorning exercises in the Barangay Poblacion. Suddenly, the suspects approached him and one of them shot him with a caliber .45 Pistol.  The suspects immediately escaped and sped away towards the direction of Buug municipality onboard a black Honda XRM motorcycle. Three empty shells of caliber .45 pistol were recovered from the crime scene.

Police Chief Superintendent Edgar Basbas, Acting Regional Director, PRO 9 was dismayed over the shooting of SPO4 Samonte who was unarmed when shot by the suspects. He assured the family members of the victim that PRO 9 will be working hard and prioritize the conduct of investigation so that justice will be served.  There will be no stone left unturned. The Command will also be giving financial assistance to the family of the victim.

Police Senior Superintendent Jose Bayani Gucela, Provincial Director. Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office, was directed to supervise the conduct of the investigation and to intensify the gathering of evidences for the early resolution of the case.

The victim’s peers were saddened by the incident.  They view SPO4 Samson Samonte as an honest, dedicated and hardworking policeman.  Rookies considered him as an older brother who constantly gave them advises. He had no known enemy and never harbor grudge with his peers.

ARD PRO9 always advises all PNP personnel under his Command to be wary at all times whether on or off-duty.  He considers that the safety of every police personnel and his family is essential.  Once again, he reminds all PNP members in the region to be extra cautious and be vigilant at all times to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents.

If the motive of the incident is work-related, the public is assured that the PRO 9 will not be swayed by such threat of lawless elements against PNP personnel in the region. Instead, the Command will intensify the conduct of operation against them for their neutralization.
