A police officer and the suspect who shot at them were killed while another police officer was injured when a police response turn into a shootout in Sitio Sapa Botong, Barangay Culasian,Sirawai, Zamboanga Del Norte at about 2:30 PM of August 12, 2015.
PSSUPT Edwin Buenaventura C. Wagan, Provincial Director of Zamboanga Del Norte Police Office, identified the fatalities as PO2 Arilon L. Lakim, PNP member assigned at Sirawai MPS and Sait Indal, the suspect of shooting incident, while the injured victim was PO3 Raniele D Villarete, also PNP member of said police station.
Based on the investigation conducted by Sirawai MPS, the police personnel of said MPS were conducting a follow-up operation against the suspect in the shooting incident that transpired at the above-mentioned place, wherein a Barangay Kagawad identified as Nasser Sandag was shot by a certain Sait Indal. However, when the authorities persuaded the alleged perpetrator who was inside his house, instead of surrendering to the authorities, fired upon the responding police men by using his improvised homemade shotgun (sumpak) hitting PO2 Lakin on his left chest. This prompted the other police officer to retaliate, hitting Sait Indal on the different parts of his body.
PO2 Lakim and Sait Indal were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician of Sirawai Rural Health Unit while PO2 Villarete suffered a minor injury. Recovered at the crime scene were an improvised homemade shotgun, five empty shells of 12-gauge shotgun and one bolo.
Police Regional Office 9 under the leadership of PCSUPT BILLY B BELTRAN, Regional Director, lauded the bravery of the members of the Sirawai MPS who responded to the incident despite the danger to their lives.
PRO9 commended the slain police officer who displayed a heroic act during the performance of his duty as a police officer. The act is indeed worthy of emulation. Likewise, PRO9 extends a heartfelt condolence to the family and friends of the slain police officer.
