2 Gun-for-Hire Men Killed in Sindangan Checkpoint Operation

Two alleged members of a gun-for-hire group operating in Zamboanga Del Norte were killed after they were engaged in a shootout with PNP personnel of Sindangan MPS during the conduct of a checkpoint operation in Sitio Buyos, Piao, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte at about 7:15 AM on October 16, 2016.

Sindangan MPS identified the fatalities as Jon Sumalpong Calapiz, legal age, and Mario Tampos y Monteron, 48, a native of Quezon, Bukidnon. Investigation showed that both suspects were on board a motorcycle travelling along the national highway when they encountered a checkpoint established in Barangay Goleo, Sindangan. The suspects evaded the checkpoint and traveled instead to Barangay Piao. Unknown to the duo, another group of PNP personnel from said police station were also conducting a checkpoint along the highway. Both the back rider and the driver drew their pistols and fired upon the PNP personnel manning the checkpoint. The policemen retaliated which led to immediate death of the two suspects.

An Armscor caliber 45 pistol bearing serial number 371526 loaded with five rounds of ammo, a caliber 9mm pistol bearing serial number 11029524 loaded with four rounds of ammos, a black and white XRM 125 motorcycle with temporary plate number 78327 bearing engine number KPY00E-178327, chassis number KPY00178393 were recovered from the killed armed men.
