PRO9 Warns Netizens of Spreading Fake News on COVID-19 in Social Media

Camp Col Romeo Abendan, Zamboanga City- The Police Regional Office (PRO) 9 cautions the public particularly the so called “Netizen” across the region to avoid spreading of misinformation and fake news article regarding the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in all social media flatforms to prevent panic and misinformation.

PBGEN Froilan F Quidilla, PRO9 Regional Director, said the spreading of fake news and misinformation is an offense that is punishable by law and that that those who will be found guilty of such crime will be penalized of prison correctional or imprisonment of six months and one day to six years.

“The PRO9 will not hesitate to file charges against anyone found sprading false information, either for violation of Presidential Decree 90 (Declaring Unlawful Rumor-Mongering and Spreading False Information) or Unlawful Use of Means of of Publication and Unlawful Utterances under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012)” He added.

He said that task units of PNP will strengthens cyber space patrolling to track down certain websites and social media accounts used for spreading of false/fake information.
